Her family has a history of breast cancer running down their bloodline. Her aunt, her mother, her grandmother were all victim of such a disease. Angelina Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy only to prevent a deadly cancer down the race. A preventive or prophylactic mastectomy is an elective operation to remove the breasts so that the risk of breast cancer is reduced.
Her surgeon, Dr. Funk explained perfectly how difficult this decision was for her: “When someone is who arguably the most beautiful woman in the world removes the part of her body that is symbolic of femininity, you have to say why would she do that?”
